Pantries are such a great idea, but until now I have never succeeded in maintaining order. But completely clear containers that come in useful sizes -- this size, in particular -- and have square corners have helped ME turn the corner so that the pantry finally works well for us.

These are lighter by far than glass, which makes them easier to use (and less worrying, honestly, because I've dropped glass containers). But they share glass's virtue of transparency. The salvaged plastic tubs or "Glad"-type containers are not transparent, and labeling them simply doesn't work as well as being able to glance at the container to see what and how much is in it. And containers with square corners line up neatly and pretty much stay that way.

The order in the pantry is great, but beyond the pantry it is easier to organize a menu or shopping list because for the first time I have a much better idea of what doesn't need to be picked up at the store. There is a grocery cost saving; space is also saved because the pantry no longer has to hold duplicates, triplicates, and more of an item like corn meal that couldn't be found at first.

An organized pantry is something that has never before survived more than a few weeks at our house. These containers have achieved what had never before been possible: a small enough accomplishment, of course, but one that makes life easier.
